Reports of Visitors:

Terry Schwartz, Assoc. Vice Chancellor for Academic & Faculty Affairs:
Both the Chancellor and Provost are attending the Board of Regents meeting being held on campus today. We have 12 new tenure track faculty and 20 new non-tenure track faculty on campus. We also have 3 new deans; Valerie Martin Conley for the College of Education, George Reed for the School of Public Affairs, and Martin Garnar for the Library. We are in the self-study year of our current ten year accreditation in preparation for the upcoming new HLC campus accreditation next year. The site visit will occur November 14 and 15 of 2016. There will be a campus forum on December 15 from 1pm – 2pm to review the process of the HLC site visit. The Regents continue to be interested with the program prioritization follow-through process and ask for updates. We have 3 new degree program proposals in front of the Board of Regents today at their meeting: Master of Science in Athletic Training, Bachelor of Arts in Inclusive Elementary Education, and Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science. All 3 degree proposals were approved.

Kelli Klebe, Assoc. Vice Chancellor for Research & Faculty Development:
Klaus Timmerhaus, a CU Boulder professor for 42 years, left a generous endowment to the university and established the Timmerhaus Teaching Ambassador Award, which honors a faculty member at any one of CU’s campuses, who in turn undertakes statewide outreach in order to showcase the high caliber of CU’s faculty. The current Timmerhaus Teaching Ambassador is Dr. Noah Finkelstein from CU Boulder and he will be coming to UCCS to talk about the value of higher education. He is asking the faculty what they would like to do, which can include students and the general public as well. The plan is to bring him to campus in the Spring, so please send ideas directly to Kelli or bring them to the next Faculty Assembly meeting in October.

Tom Napierkowski, CU System Privilege & Tenure Committee Chair:
The Privilege & Tenure Committee (P&T) is a system-wide grievance committee for faculty with perceived violations of rights and privileges. Their charge is to independently investigate, mediate on procedures and make recommendations based on outcomes. The members of this committee on our campus are Lynda Dickson, Don Morley, Rick Dukes (campus chair), and Tom is the P&T Committee Chair. Their website address is http://www.cu.edu/privilegeandtenure. General faculty with titles listed on the website whose appointments are 50% or more have the right to file a grievance. In 2013-14, there were 9 cases: 3 from Boulder, 4 from Denver, 2 from Anschutz and 0 from UCCS. Last year there were 6 cases: 2 from Boulder, 2 from Denver, 2 from Anschutz and 0 from UCCS. Although they are working with non-tenure track faculty as well, there are some ambiguous issues concerning non-tenure track faculty as a result of definitions and applications in the wording of their appointments – the “at will” wording sets up some roadblocks that the committee is looking into.
